Delivered by qualified and experienced staff, CancerCare’s wide range of free professional therapy services are designed to help individuals and their families come to terms with and manage the challenges of a serious health condition and include: Counselling, Hypnotherapy, Alexander Technique, Aromatherapy Massage, Group Activities, Support Groups and a Children and Young People’s Service.

With over 30 years of experience, CancerCare has worked with and helped over 22,000 local people affected by cancer and other life limiting conditions.

CancerCare began life in 1983 as a small volunteer led telephone helpline service based in an office within Royal Lancaster Infirmary offering support to local cancer patients and their families in an informal, relaxed manner. CancerCare now has two dedicated centres based in Kendal (The Lakes Centre, Blackhall Road) and in Lancaster (Slynedales, Slyne Road) and also provides outreach services in local hospitals and community outlets.

All CancerCare services are provided free of charge; possible only through fundraising and generous donations from local people.

Testimonials

It’s such a friendly welcoming place with genuinely caring staff.

They offered me professional councelling and aromatherapy massage sessions which made me feel so much better especially when I felt really poorly after chemotherapy. Just being able to make time for you and feel pampered really helped me come to terms with everything that had happened. And CancerCare helped my husband too; he had hypnotherapy sessions to
help him sleep better and cope better with all the worry and stress. The way I look at it is that the NHS took care of the cancer but CancerCare looked after the rest of me and my family. The support they gave us was just as important. It’s such a friendly welcoming place with genuinely caring staff. And I’ve also met some great friends there.

Hypnotherapy is like receiving an injection of positive thoughts.

A lot of people think Hypnotherapy is just Paul McKenna type stuff but it’s much more than that. Hypnotherapy is like receiving an injection of positive thoughts. During the session you are put into a deep state of relaxation. It’s really helped me deal with my anxieties. It has also brought some stability back into my life and given me motivation to start looking forward to my future – I’ve started exercising again, something I had previously given up on. And, I am also getting married next year to my wonderful finance! The wedding will be amazing, I can’t wait!

I've been coming for 12 weeks now and it's been great.

After having an initial chat with the team I decided I really liked the idea of having Indian Head Massage. I've been coming for 12 weeks now and it's been great. The good thing about CancerCare is the fact they are not emotionally attached or directly involved in my situation. All their staff are fully trained and qualified so you know they can give you that much needed support when you're going through a really difficult time. I actually felt guilty at first accessing the service because I wasn't the one who was ill. But I soon realised, what use am I to my family if I suddenly break down or collapse? I don't often ask for help but recognised it was important for me to look after myself. Being able to have some 'me' time and relax has helped me - and my family - immensely.

We really are so lucky to have CancerCare in our local area.

Andrea, you have breast cancer,” the doctor said. I didn’t really hear anything else after that. Cancer. I have Cancer. I just couldn’t take it in. I then had to break the news to my family. The impact of my diagnosis hit us all hard. But that was just the beginning. Then came chemotherapy. It made me very sick. Having poisonousness toxins pumped into your body for months on end eventually takes its toll. But then I found out about CancerCare and the services they offer local people like me. I then started a 12 week course of aromatherapy massage to help combat some of the nasty side effects I was experiencing from the chemo. Something as simple as having a massage once a week made such a difference to me. I didn’t have to worry about what I said to the therapists – they weren’t going to break down or get upset. I could just be myself. We're so lucky to have CancerCare in our local area and I just want to ask everyone to keep supporting them– they really deserve all our support!
